Home Blessings - New stuff :)

In Israel, almost every family hangs a Home blessing.
It can be a Hamsa (5 finger hand) or a different shape but it's a very popular ornament.

The prayer's written in Hebrew or in English and asking for peace, love and happiness for the home tenants. Most of us hang it near the main door, to protect our home and family from bad luck and the evil eye.

I love making those unique home blessing wall ornaments, they are a perfect gift!

All in my Etsy

Polymeri Online 29.11.07 - Hanukkah

Hanukkah also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday beginning on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may fall anytime from late November to late December. It celebrates the re-kindling of the Temple menorah at the time of the Maccabee rebellion.

The festival is observed in Jewish homes by the kindling of lights on each night of the holiday and spinning a dreidel. Various menorot used for Hanukkah, also called Hanukiot.

The dreidel, or sevivon in Hebrew, is a four-sided spinning top that children play with on Hanukkah. Each side is imprinted with a Hebrew letter. These letters are an acronym for the Hebrew words "Nes Gadol Haya Sham"A great miracle happened there" (referring to the miracle of the oil that took place in the Beit Hamikdash).

Let's see some of my Israeli and non-Israeli friends making their Hanukiot and Dreidels -

Lindly Haunani tips about keeping knives sharp worth a million -
* don’t cut directly onto a glass or marble work-surface, use a slip sheet of bond paper, index card or deli-wrap instead
* when trimming clay against metal = bead mandrels or metal rulers use a utility knife instead
* store your blade when not in use in a plastic box sleeve or a polymer clay blade case
* try to avoid dropping it onto hard surfaces, as a burr at the end of the blade makes for “dull” cutting
* the acidity in some people’s natural skin oils can cause the blade to tarnish and drag... read more in this link:

Marina Bychkova from http://www.enchanteddoll.com/ makes (according to her) distant, far-away sadness dolls that recall childhood fairy-tales, and a dark, brooding sexuality. These are definitely not kid's toys, but stunning works of art.

Linda S. Wingerter grew up in a family of artists: her great grandfather painted church murals in Russia, her grandfather was a puppeteer, her grandmother was a miniaturist, her father was a graphic artist, and her mother is a book designer. She became a published artist at 13 when Cricket Magazine printed her drawing of a paper dragon in their letter pages.
Linda enjoys renovating her 90 year old house, making dolls, figure skating, and playing the fiddle and musical saw. She uses painted sculpy for the dolls head, the rest is: lace, muslin, ribbon, metal moulding, wire, DMC thread, dowels, and costume jewelry.

REGESH Project

Last year 3 of our israeli soliders were taken by terrorists -

Gilad Schalit - On Sunday, 06/25/2006, at 05:40 in the morning, a terrorist group of several Palestinians crossed the border south of the Gaza Strip into Israel through a tunnel and attacked an army facility that was within the sovereign territory of Israel. Gilad was Taken.

Udi Goldwasser & Eldad Regev - On Sunday, 06/18/2006, Udi and Eldad were called up for reserve service on the northern border. They were meant to serve 28 days. The service was to include security patrols along the border and other security tasks for the defense of Israel's northern settlements. They were suddenly attacked by a group of Hezbollah terrorists and were taken.

The Israeli Polymer Clay community decided on a project to be called: ר.ג.ש"/Regesh (Feeling) which stands for the initials of the three last names of the Israeli soldiers kidnapped: Eldad Regev, Udi Goldwasser, Gilad Shalit.
Regesh (Feeling) is a volunteer project of artists from the "Polymer Clay Art Forum" that care about the safety and well being of the kidnapped soldiers. The Forum wishes to support the soldiers' families and let them know they are not alone in the struggle to return their sons home. All proceeds from the sale of our key chains go to assist and support the families of the kidnapped soldiers in their struggle to free their sons.
For more information please go to: http://www.habanim.org/en/index_en.html
for purchase please contact me on imishly@gmail.com or visit http://www.arcoiris.co.il/regesh.htm

Happy New Year & "Shana Tova"

On the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah, after the holiday prayer service, we say kiddush over wine and eat a festive meal. Special Rosh Hashanah food customs have developed over the centuries. We dip a round challah into honey, and say the blessing over the bread. Next we dip a piece of apple into honey and ask for a good and sweet year.

Here are some of the sweet polymer clay creations by some of my friends clayers -

Shay Aaron Apple magnets -
We eat sweet foods on Rosh Hashanah as a symbol of our wish for a sweet year. In biblical times, honey was the sweetener. Honey also represented good living and wealth. The Land of Israel is often called the land of milk and honey in the Bible.Apple and honey are symbols

Rosh v literally means "head of the year." Just as our head (brain) directs us, Rosh HaShana directs the ensuing year. On this day, we stock up on sustenance for the year to come. In addition, it is our hope to be the head (leader) of other nations through our righteous acts. For these reasons, it has become a tradition to eat the head of a fish during the holiday meal. Fish is also eaten on this holiday because it is symbolic of fertility and abundance. http://www.flickr.com/photos/irismishly/1170699900/

Symbolic Meaning of Traditional Rosh Hashanah Food like Round Challah Bread - The round shape symbolizes a perfect year to come. Sometimes raisins or honey are added to make it extra sweet. Here is Anat Shmueli's baguette (close to a Challah ;)http://www.flickr.com/photos/anat_shmueli/414719808/

On the second night of Rosh Hashanah, we eat a new fruit which we have not yet eaten this season. When we eat this new fruit, we say the shehechiyanu blessing which thanks God for keeping us alive and bringing us to this season. This ritual reminds us to appreciate the fruits of the earth and being alive to enjoy them. A pomegranate is often used as this new fruit. In the Bible, the Land of Israel is praised for its pomegranates. It is also said that this fruit contains 613 seeds just as there are 613 mitzvot. Another reason given for blessing and eating this fruit on Rosh HaShana is that we wish that our good deeds in the ensuing year will be as plentiful as the seeds of the pomegranate.

So i wish you all a Happy New Year from us in Israel - "Shana Tova"!

August Ocean Challenge of PCAGOE

It's been a month since i joined Polymer Clay Artists Guild of Etsy (PCAGOE) and it's a real fun, meeting nice people, sharing tips and all the goodness from communities on this lovable subject of polymer clay.

I decided to participate in the August Ocean Challenge, which was my first challenge on the guild, and for that matter i prepared 2 pieces - one was a fish barrette, and the second one was a 3 disc necklace.

Only one piece could be featured so i chose the fish barrette and was Honorable Mentioned :)

Such fun!

Thank you all voters :)
